HOW TO SEND A PRIVATE MESSAGE

A private message (PM) can be sent to any member. PMs are confidential and are only seen by their addressees.

1. Click the member's name found in the Author and Last Post columns of every forum. This opens the member's profile
2. Click PM, found under "Contact"
3. In the message form that opens, type or paste in your subject and message texts.
4. Click PREVIEW to check for errors
5. Click SUBMIT

Or If you want to send a PM in response to a particular post that automatically quotes the post:
1. Click PM, found in the lower left-hand corner of the post
2. In the message form that opens, use you backspace key to delete any unwanted parts of the quote
3. Type or paste in your message beneath the quote.
4. Click PREVIEW to check for errors
5. Click SUBMIT

Or there is alternate method of sending a PM to another user without using a post. You can get to the PM section as follows:
1. Click on the 'User Control Panel' link found in the blue bar just under the FF masthead
2. Under 'Options' on the left side of the screen, click on 'private messages'
3. On the left of the screen, using the Username and 'Find Member' sections, you can find an addressee for your message
4. Type your message into the text box
5. Click PREVIEW to check for errors
6. Click SUBMIT

NOTE: Hyper links can be added to PMs.

What I would like to know and haven't been able to do, Al, is to send a CC of a PM to another user as well as the addressee. I can send a CC to the moderators but haven't been able to send to someone else. When I get the name into the top box I haven't found a way of transferring it to the message header itself?

Beats me, Smudger. Not being a moderator or monitor, I don't have the option of sending a CC or BCC regardless of the primary addressee's status. A guess is this is an optional system restriction that could be lifted by admin.. (Blue! Help!) So for now it looks like you have to send a duplicate PM that notes in its text that it's a CC.

My first test, and I failed.

Al,

You haven't failed, but your A+ grade is now in doubt :D

In answer to your query, there is no option to allow c.c.'s, but I have activated the ability to add multiple users and groups as addresses, which should have a similar result, i.e. if I address a message to Smudge and Al, but in the body of the message it is addressed only to Smudge with a c.c. at the bottom to Al, it should be obvious to the recipient what the purpose of the pm was, such as...

"Hi Smudge,

Al is doing a great job, but don't tell him that I said so. Okay?

Blue

c.c. All-Ears Al"

Does that make sense, or have I lost marks too?

I saw that, but false modesty forbids me to reply.

Blue, I would second the idea that I can't send a CC because it hasn't been enabled on the board and that perhaps, somewhere in your system, there is a switch that only you as administrator have access to?

(Don't tell us you can't find it or they won't let you have the nuclear launch codes again)

I have searched, Smudge. I could push that red button with all of the danger warnings next to it, but, being a peace loving Canadian, I wouldn't want to be the cause of WW III by nuking Russia

Sunandita, the reason you cannot use the private message system is because it is not available to you until you have been confirmed as a full member.

This is a protection against people who would join and then distribute spam, or try to file-share.

PM activity is activated once newly registered members become regular members. This occurs when you've made your first few approved posts, or when admin manually activates you as a regular member, which I've now done. :D
