If you're like me, you enjoy using a bedside laptop to nod off while listening
to an audio book or internet radio, but don't like the idea of keeping your
computer running all night. If so PC Sleep is for you. It is a nifty little freebee
(less than 800kb) that is both flexible and extremely easy to use.

HOW IT WORKS: Once you've downloaded and installed PC
Sleep, a new icon will appear on your desktop. Click it, and In
the small box which opens:

1. Select the function you want (Log Off, Shutdown, Standby,
or Hibernate).
2. Select the timer mode for a designated time, or for hours and
and minutes.
3. Click start. (This is easier than setting the sleep timer on many
TVs and radios.)

If you wish you can hide PC Sleep in your task bar while it's operating. PC Sleep
can be disengaged by clicking STOP. There also is a one minute warning popup
which appears before your PC automatically shuts down.

The free PC Sleep download is here: http://pc-sleep.en.softonic.com/

P.S. Free audio books in all genres, including classic sci fi and classic
mysteries, are available for streaming and downloading here:

The above info is about to become obsolete since this timer is only compatible with the XP operating system, which itself will be obsolete after April 7, 2014.

There is another option which works on windows 7, though i am not sure about windows 8..
press and hold the windows key (the one usually between the left hand alt and ctrl/control buttons, with the windows symbol on it), and while holding that button, press the r button. This will open the "run" dialogue. in this box, type "cmd" (without the quotation marks) and press enter.
a new window will appear, which will look very familiar to older computer users.. a windows clone of the dos command prompt.
in the command prompt box, enter the text "shutdown -s -t x" where x is the delay in seconds before shutdown, again without quotation marks.
this will start a countdown, at the end of which, your computer will shutdown as normal.
more experienced dos/windows users can create a batch file, which will execute this command automatically, with a preset time.
if anyone out there has windows 8, feel free to experiment and let me know if it works with that system.
hope this helps :)
