Blue,

I have been shooting in 1920x1280 and offering the clips in 1280x720 HD resolution wmv format since Dec of 2009. The file size difference using modern compression codecs is about 50-100MB and sometimes no difference at all. The difference between HD and SD via download is quite impressive. Several of my customers regularly run their movies on 50+ inch big screens.

Here is a sample in HD 1280x720:

And here is the same sample in SD 720x480:

Rather then play it in your browser, download and blow it up full screen. With monitor sizes averaging 24+ inches now a days, it makes a big differences in my view.

They both look good---though. I guess it just comes down to how big the average monitor or playback source is. If folkd are playing them on a cell phone or iPad, well, no love lost. :-)

However, I found that if the Mac I was editing on was prior to 2006, it slows the editing process down. So, that is something to consider. Otherwise, HD's are cheap. You can slap together a 8TB raid pretty low cost. But, with AVCHC compression, the files are not much bigger.

Though, I remember when the average release size was 352x240 or worse, 320x240.

I'd just like to add that for my custom with Blue and Petra, they followed my script so closely I couldn't believe it. Down to the very letter they did everything I asked for with incredible results. I was very impressed and more than a little pleased. I hope to have the chance to order another custom from our intrepid Blue one day very soon.

I DO appreciate your customer service, Blue. That problem you worked so hard on three years ago was eventually solved by technology. I can connect my computer to a big screen tv now and watch a large image with nothing cropped out. Large enough, anyway.

It was the quality of my recent Last Breath (Seductive Studios) customs that reopened the old wounds. They are loaded with full body "money shots" (in HD) that were in short supply in my Bluestone customs, by comparison. Then, the "artistic vision" comment made me think that perhaps your love of the closer views caused you to not fully understand what I wanted to see. I don't think it was malicious on your part. I seemed satisfied because that was my only custom experience at the time. I assumed every producer would quickly abandon the long shot for a closer view that didn't feed my sexy footwear fetish. Now I know what is possible. I didn't think you would redo a whole segment at a future shoot. I guess I should have asked.

Obviously, if you can reshoot the Cheerleader Suzi bed strangle in HD with a full body money shot, that would be fantastic!

The HD trailer is clearly superior. Those poor amazons!

Thanks JohnM, LT and Chstr for your comments!

I guess I didn't keep up on advances with compression, John. My next Suzi shoot will be shot in HD. Your samples convinced me. It's great that you are so willing to help fellow producers. Your stuff is great and everyone within reading distance should go right out and buy one of your HD videos. Fantastic quality production!

LT, I'm glad you were happy with your custom. I always try to give the customer what he/she wants, and have got better over the years with my productions and with following customers' directions.

Chstr, I'm glad that Seduction Studios filmed some great customs for you. They are a wonderful studio. I'm not really into artistic vision, but I thought you'd want some close-ups of the action. Re-doing those scenes was never a problem. I just didn't realize that a redo was necessary, and I guess you didn't realize it three years ago either. Well, I've got Suzi looking for those shoes and boots, and I'll put those scenes together for you.

Now, I don't want to dominate this thread.

Other producers, guys and doll? ...and your thoughts on why they should be supported.

Sorry, Blue. I was not meaning to self promote. I am a geek and us geeks sometimes think we know it all when it comes to geeky stuff like codecs. I know there is a lot more that goes into the HD decision then that. Back in 2007, I was struggling hard about converting when it was first starting to get asked for. But, I waited. What convinced me back in 2010 was that everything was HD. TV, consumer cameras, smart phones--everything. So, I figured at that point, people would be used to it. When I launched them, I braced for the playback and speed issues, but had almost none. So, I think, most people are HD ready at this point. That is why I made my plug for it.

But, like Blue said, buy my stuff too. :-)

I think this thread is very interesting. I would like to elaborate on my answer to Question 1 in view of chstr's comments.

1. Is it important to you that a producer shares our fetish?

I think that sometimes it may be good if the producer is a "general" producer. When I work with people who cater to many fetishes, they seem to be much better at reading my requests. They know that the point of fetish custom videos is to cater to the fetish, and not to create a great looking video. And they know that if I want fetish A, and they film fetish B, then I will be unhappy.

My problems have been mostly with people who only cater to one fetish. Their idea seems to be to make a great video featuring their concept of fetish A. Since they already feel that they know fetish A, they just focus on making a great video. But the problem is that I don't want a great video. I want a video catering to my concept of fetish A.

I'm always uneasy about producers who are too caught up with things like music and other general film issues. I have a lot of fetishes, but music is not one of them.

HD is important because it makes a better picture, though, so I hope that all producers reading this realize the importance of HD.

For me, both as a producer and as a viewer, the quality of the production is actually pretty important. I'm into things that have good production values, and the right music even fits in there at some point. But the main issues are the acting (realistic, not wandering around saying "oh, you shot me" after four or five bullet hits), the FX, the wounds, the right blood, the right models (face and body)...

My Last Breath custom "Red Carpet Premiere" that I mentioned earlier is now available. I've posted some more captures in the Video and Image Share Forum.
