MY COMPUTER DIED! ALL IS LOST!

Well if you had the sense to follow the advise in the opening post of this thread,
and backed up your computer's contents on one or more hard drives nothing
is lost, and the above exclamations and what follows below do not apply to you.

In the words of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, "Don't Panic!" There is a
better than even chance your computer's fatal crash had nothing to do with
its hard drive, and everything on it will be fully retrievable. However it will cost
you about $30 USD to find out if this is so.

WARNING: IF YOUR COMPUTER'S DEATH WAS CAUSED BY A FATAL VIRUS
INFECTION, DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY OF THE FOLLOWING! RETRIEVING
DATA FROM A VIRUS-INFECTED HARD DRIVE MUST ONLY BE DONE BY
A COMPETENT PROFESSIONAL!

STEP ONE: Disassemble the laptop or desktop. Disconnect and remove the
hard drive. If you're at all handy with ordinary small tools, this shouldn't be a
problem. However if you would rather not make the attempt, a local computer
repair shop will usually do the job for a nominal fee. (My local guy charges $10.)

STEP TWO: Using a universal hard drive cable such as shown in FIG 1 connect
the HD to one of you new computer's USB2 ports, Follow the cable set's simple
instructions, and you're home free. With a sigh of relief you can start transferring
those thousands of adorable cat photos to you new PC.

ALTERNATE STEP TWO: Why throw out your old hard drive when it can be used
for storage and or to back up your new computer. For this you'll want to install
the old drive in an enclosure such as shown in FIG 2. The procedure is essentially
the same as described in step two. However you'll need to know what type of
hard drive you have (IDE or SATA) in order to match it to the correct enclosure. If
you have no idea of what I'm talking about, I suggest placing a phone order for
the enclosure with a dealer like Tiger Direct. Their phone reps will have no trouble
in guiding you to the correct enclosure type.
