Is there a Santa Claus? - a physicist view
Consider the following:

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are
300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified,
and while most of these are insects and germs, this does
not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa
has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the
world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim,
Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the
workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to
Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of
3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One
presumes there's at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to
the different time zones and the rotation of the earth,
assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical).

This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say
that for each Christian household with good children, Santa
has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh,
jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the
remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have
been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh
and move on to the next house.

Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly
distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to
be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will
accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household,
a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to
do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus
feeding and etc.

This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per
second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of
comparison, the fastest man- made vehicle on earth, the
Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second -
a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element.
Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized
lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons,
not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight.
On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds.
Even granting that 'flying reindeer' (see point #1) could pull
TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight,
or even nine.We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload
- not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons.
Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the
Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates
enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in
the same fashion as spacecraft re-entering the earth's
atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3
QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each.
In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously,
exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic
booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized
within 4.26 thousandths of a second.

Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces
17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa
(which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of
his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.>

In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on
Christmas Eve, he's dead now. :?

Nonsense!

I have a 5 year contract with Mr. Claus to deliver my line of life sized Dalila dolls to anyone who is not caught file sharing without expressed written consent of the producers in question.

I have changed the original title of Jafa's post above from "Is There a Santa Claus?" to the current title. Prior to this post being made here, I saw it posted on DS, and both pmailed and emailed Jafa, requesting that he NOT make this post on FF. He has ignored my request. Perhaps I am wrong, but it wasn't so long ago that I had young children who looked forward to Christmas for the harmless magic that surrounds the season and the spirit of joy that seems to capture the hearts of young and old. I just didn't want to be the owner of a site that would post a thread entitled "Is There a Santa Claus?" when we are already mislabeled by society in general as a negative, and perhaps dangerous, group of individuals, because of our misunderstood fetish. I just didn't want to be the owner of a site where a google search could send a young, impressionable child to FF, because of the subject-matter of such a post. I visualize an inquiring child like Virginia. Many will recall several years ago, when a child named Virginia wrote to a magazine and asked if there was a Santa Claus. The magazine's editor replied with the famous phrase, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!" and went on to explain the positive spirit of Christmas. I would prefer FF to be known as a positive site, not a negative one.

Am I wrong? Am I over-reacting? Or is this and other threads posted by Jafa about Christmas a complete turn-off for others as they are for me.

In the event that a child such as Virginia is reading this post, "Yes, my friend, there is a Santa Claus, and he will continue to exist and bring joy to the lives of children all over the world as long as the positive message of Christmas is remembered by our society... the message of love and hope... and the belief that miracles still occur, despite those too blind to open their eyes and minds to accept them."

Well, Glock45, Jafa wasn't banned for bad humour, and won't be. I'm merely stating an opinion on this subject and encouraging others to do the same. This is a public message board. Certain forums are not viewable by the general public, but this main forum, except for attachments added to posts, is indeed viewable by the world. Thus, I feel that we have to be sensitive to that fact when we make postings such as the one that started this thread.

The two sections not available to public view:

Pulped Fiction

Video and Image Share forum.

Keep in mind that other boards have all their forum areas open to the public.

Now:

About the thread title...

Given the explanation of the change, I tend to agree. I really don't see that as a neon sign pointing (in a google way) it's lurid arrow this way. I am more aware, if you will, of the availability of posts that the public can view, than what they will find "if" they happen to do a search.

I'm one who can appreciate humour in it's many forms. I am not overly sensitive to, what I know is, a joke. Like these fetishes we have, it's just FANTASY.

Having said that...

I would prefer something, like some prior joke posts from weeks ago, that will actually make me laugh. These recent attempts have left me a bit, for lack of a better term, flaccid.

To Glock45 and Others with concern,

These boards are not age restricted; however, they are part of a site whose front door provides warnings of age-restricted material. Parents who use any kind of supervisory or nanny software wouldn't have to worry, because the key words on this site would restrict this site from minors. If parents do not restrict Internet browsing for their children, this site is nothing compared to the over-the-top porn sites whose front doors are plastered with very graphic sexual images. The Internet has it all, good and bad! Most of those who post here realize this, employ usernames to protect their identities, and interact just fine. Glock, is your concern for the minors or just the fact that anyone can read these posts?

Perhaps this thread needs a lighter touch

http://www.stnicholascenter.org/Brix?pageID=38

I thought it may be interesting to those who consider Christmas to be a wonderful time to considerthe life of the real Saint Nicholas.

For those who take a more humanist view of religion clearly this was a man whose life is to be respected, as is the life of Jesus.

For those who believe in the deeper sacred meaning of Christmas, as the celebration of the Messiah's birth, perhaps this will give some contrast to the "jolly fat fellow" we usually think of this time of year.

I am always interested in a good joke, even regarding Christmas and other sacred holidays, but this is still a deeply sacred time of year for me.

I recall a reply to the first posting from many, many, many years ago, in which Santa is considered to be a quantum wave form, thereby allowing him to visit all children in the world in one night without self destruction.

Classic Santa vs. Relative Santa

I understand exactly where you are coming from, Dalila. I have always been aware of the differences in what is truth and what is pure capitalistic abuse of real peoples lives.

I am, however, not at all religious, in the sense that I follow the teachings of any church. I believe that religion lies within each of us. Some may use religion for personal gain, some for the image that they perceive they portray, but most because they are true believers. I am just not a part of modern religion. I feel my beliefs are true, maybe not to what some might want me to believe, but close enough that I am satisfied in them.

I find your comments very interesting.

I can walk into any church wearing a very conservative outfit, even with a veil over my head, and yet be judged as a "whore" by the good church leaders (mostly the female ones) of any specific denomination.

I to do not follow too literally the dogma of any particular church. I am however Catholic because after having experienced the hypocrisy of many other demoninations, (especially the so called "new thought" churches) I have decided that I can live with the many flaws of the original Christian church when I compare them to the others I have seen.

It is simply a personal choice, perhaps one made as much out of culture as faith, but it is my own

Personally, I move churches every few years, because sooner or later the manmade dogma and church politics begin to obscure the main underlying reason for its existence. When I move churches, I also usually move denominations. It's amazing how much Christian (including Catholic) Churches differ one from the other. I'm at a church that really rocks right now, but even it has its problems. The problem with all of them is that they are all controlled by humans. That is why religion, as opposed to one's personal faith, can be a real turnoff for people. I've often heard the phrase, "Well, if he's a Christian, then I don't want to be one. He's a hypocrite." Well, guess what. Even if you found the perfect church, once you join, it's not perfect any more, because you are an imperfect being, just like the rest of us. The problem with religion lies either with man or God, and I'm betting it's not God, that's the problem. It's those who claim that they have a monopoly on God

Wherever and however you celebrate Christmas (if you do), I wish you all a Wonderful and Blessed Christmas and only the best for 2010!
